Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease that requires long-term, patient-centered management. Despite the availability of effective pharmacologic therapies, many individuals face significant barriers when initiating and maintaining treatment — including stigma, access challenges, cost, side effects, and therapeutic inertia. In this session, an obesity specialist physician will walk through the real-world patient journey, highlighting key inflection points from diagnosis to treatment initiation and long-term management. Through a series of clinical scenarios, participants will explore the practical and psychosocial challenges patients encounter, as well as the factors that influence adherence, persistence, and outcomes.
A particular focus will be placed on the critical role of pharmacists as accessible, trusted healthcare providers. The session will provide actionable strategies to support patients through:
-
Navigating medication access and coverage
-
Counseling on expectations, side effects, and long-term use
-
Addressing weight bias and fostering supportive communication
-
Identifying opportunities for early intervention and follow-up
By the end of this session, participants will have a deeper understanding of the complexities of obesity management and the tools needed to support patients more effectively across the continuum of care.
