Pharmacists have been the go-to resource for iron supplementation, and now with BC Pharmacists having the authority to order laboratory tests and proactively consult with patients on treatment options, a refresher and deeper understanding of iron deficiency anemia is warranted. All pharmacists in community practice will encounter patients who are in need of iron supplementation. The data demonstrates that many people with iron deficiency anemia are not identified, as well those with iron deficiency without anemia can take preventative action. Iron deficiency is a common issue in women of child-bearing age and during pregnancy, present differently in people with chronic inflammatory conditions, and can be a concern in vegan diets. With the increasing number of iron supplement options, Pharmacists need to know how best to identify and discuss the issue with patients and assist in the optimal product selection that meets their health need. This session is focused on providing the
knowledge for pharmacists to identify and help patients with iron deficiency and improve their health.
