Description

“I was in Emerg two days ago and they bandaged me up and told me to keep it dry. The bandage has now fallen off. Is this healing the way it should be? It’s quite red and painful. Do I need to go back to Emerg?”

The difference between a healing wound and a non-healing wound, with dire consequences including amputation and death, can be the well-timed, educated intervention of a community pharmacist. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and yet, it is often the most overlooked organ in terms of recognizing its role and function. Skin changes could be an indicator of an individual’s health, and skin that doesn’t heal in a timely manner could be an indicator that there may be larger concerns. By the end of this session, pharmacists will be better equipped to support skin health in our communities. By recognizing people who are at risk of wounds, pharmacists can have targeted conversations in wound prevention. Further, when people present with wounds, pharmacists will have increased confidence to make recommendations and support wound healing by identifying “what the wound needs” and “what the person with a wound needs.
