Description

Access to COVID19 antivirals has improved in Ontario since late 2022. With Pharmacists new enhanced scope of practice, Ontarians who would benefit most from the medication, now have an opportunity for improved access to care. There remain ‘treatment deserts’, in the eligible population. Understanding the utility of COVID19 antivirals in practice will help remove additional patient barriers. The Community Pharmacist is well poised to recognize the patient population who would benefit most from COVID19 antivirals, able to employ strategies to address the DDI’s related to this therapy and contribute to improved patient outcomes using their knowledge and skills. Proactive planning in patient identification, medication management and patient consultation, is the next step in this ever changing pandemic landscape. Reducing the urgency of medication provision, with timely preplanning, will further improve patient access and outcomes.
