Description

Wounds can be mild requiring limited self-care support, or they can be complex with very dire consequences, including amputations and death. With expanded scope of practice of assessing and treating minor skin health issues, it is expected there will be an increased opportunity for pharmacists to provide direct vital, cost-effective care within the healthcare system, while recognizing when wounds should be referred for more advanced timely management. This session is intended to support pharmacists in assessing wounds such that pharmacists will recognize risk factors that complicate wound healing, recognize what the wound needs to heal (if it is healable), and gain insight into how to support a person’s self-management of a wound. Integrating the pharmacist into the wound health-care team will be emphasized with a focus on prevention of wounds and education of people affected by wounds.
